Diploma of School Age Education and Care

This is a nationally recognised qualification designed for educators responsible for the day-to-day running of regulated school age education and care services in Australia. Graduates will be equipped to plan, implement, and manage programs across all areas of service operations, using specialised knowledge and theoretical concepts in diverse work situations. This qualification is ideal for those working in outside school hours care (OSHC) and vacation care settings.

  • The CHC50221 Diploma of School Age Education and Care is a nationally recognised qualification designed for educators responsible for the day-to-day running of regulated school age education and care services in Australia. Graduates will be equipped to plan, implement, and manage programs across all areas of service operations, using specialised knowledge and theoretical concepts in diverse work situations. This qualification is ideal for those working in outside school hours care (OSHC) and vacation care settings.

    To achieve this qualification, students must complete a minimum of 280 hours of work with school age children in a regulated education and care service in Australia. These hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include a requirement for workplace hours.

    • CHCSAC006 – Support children to participate in school age care

    • CHCSAC007 – Develop and implement play and leisure experiences in school age care

    • CHCSAC008 – Work collaboratively and respectfully with school age children

    • CHCSAC010 – Foster holistic learning, development and wellbeing for school age children

    • HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

    • HLTFSE007 – Oversee the day-to-day implementation of food safety in the workplace

    • HLTWHS003 – Maintain work health and safety

    • SISXDIS001 – Facilitate inclusion for people with a disability

    • Mode: Blended delivery (combination of face-to-face, online, and workplace-based learning)

    • Duration: Typically 12–24 months, depending on the training provider and student commitment

    • Work Placement: Minimum of 280 hours in a regulated school age education and care service

    • Support: Access to trainers and assessors for guidance throughout the course

    • Resources: Comprehensive learning materials provided, including textbooks and online resources

    • Age: Minimum of 18 years

    • Education: Completion of Year 10 or equivalent

    • Prerequisites: While there are no formal prerequisites, it is recommended that students have completed a Certificate III or IV in a related field or have relevant industry experience

    • Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN): Students may be required to undertake an LLN assessment to determine support needs

    • Working with Children Check: Mandatory for work placement; students must obtain a clear check prior to commencing placement

    • Trainer Support: Regular contact with trainers via phone, email, or online platforms

    • Assessment Assistance: Guidance provided for completing assessments and practical tasks

    • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Available for students with existing skills and experience in the industry

    • Credit Transfer: Applicable for students who have completed equivalent units in other qualifications

    • Full Fee: $8,000 (includes Child Safe Environments + First Aid training)
